Lama Al-Akhras

Position:NSW Branch-appointed Director

About

Lama Al-Akhras is an experienced Arabic interpreter who has worked in the field since 2010. Born in Syria, she holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce and economics from the University of Damascus and studied French at the French Cultural Centre in Damascus, later receiving a scholarship to study in France.

Her interpreting career began in Damascus, where she worked as an Arabic–French interpreter before joining the Canadian Embassy. After migrating to Australia in 2000 she pursued professional development, and progressed from NAATI Paraprofessional to Professional and Certified Interpreter certification levels.

In 2024, Lama received a scholarship to study legal interpreting at Monash University, graduating with high distinction in 2025, and in 2026 became a NAATI-certified specialist legal interpreter. She has been serving as co-delegate of AUSIT’s Arabic Language Division since 2025 and chair of its NSW Branch since October 2026.

Lama views interpreting as a calling rather than simply a profession. Her Auslan studies (2017–18), though incomplete due to illness, demonstrate her broad dedication to access and equity. Passionate about helping others and connecting diverse communities, she believes interpreters are bridges between cultures, lifelong learners and trusted voices for those who need to be heard.
