Translation revision plays a vital role in ensuring quality, both during the initial translation phase (self-revision) and in subsequent stages (revision by others). This process offers significant advantages to all stakeholders.

For translators and language service providers, it is a critical component of quality assurance; neglecting it can harm professional reputations or organisational credibility and may even lead to financial or legal consequences. For governmental and non-governmental organizations that commission translations, thorough revision helps guarantee that public communications are clear, appropriate, and effective. It also safeguards the organisation’s image and can prevent additional expenses, such as those incurred if a whole communication strategy is impacted. For translation end users, revision enhances the clarity and relevance of the message, ultimately improving effectiveness and user experience.

In this webinar, we will briefly go through the revision parameters covered in the 2024 PD on “Translation Revision—Profiles, Parameters, and Professional Solidarities” (available for purchase from the AUSIT webstore here) and subsequently focus on revision procedures and practicalities. Participants will be asked to share and describe the revision processes they use individually or those recommended by their language service provider. This will be followed by practical exercises aimed at identifying translation and language errors using a revision brief, distinguishing between necessary revisions and personal preferences, and discussing how different revision approaches and procedures can result in either oversights or unnecessary revisions.
