AUSIT Webinar | 20180321 Accuracy of Interpreting & Translation

Accuracy is one of the AUSIT Code of Ethics’ principal ethical requirements for interpreters and translators. Most practitioners would also agree that this is their primary responsibility. However, the concept of accuracy is a complex one which is often ‘interpreted’ in many different ways. This presentation will argue that the meaning of accuracy depends on the type and mode of interpreting, the setting where the interpreter works, the institutional requirements and the working conditions under which an interpreter is working, as well as the type of text to be translated and the brief or skopos of the translation task. The presentation discusses the feasibility of achieving the ideal standards in light of the lack of regulation about I&T training and inadequate working conditions.
